Performance and art project by Catherine Claeyé with technical support by Hilde Vets: "a big cube of rammed earth" would be constructed in the gallery of Pocketroom.
A grant was requested and confirmed by the Flemish Ministry of Culture but due to budget cuts, no money was distributed and the project was cancelled.
A model of the earthen cube was made by Catherine Claeyé and Hilde Vets on 28th of June 2009.
Artist Catherine Claeyé about the project:
"It is a site-specific project. The location of the Pocketroom with its monumental windows brought the idea to 'plaster' a window with earth. It forces the spectator to experience space differently. By the presence of the earthen mass, the room is more straightened but also increases as it starts to relate to the outside environment.
By moving the earth to within, a shift in meaning arises. Earth is here no longer used as such in agriculture or in earthen architecture. The connection with Mother Earth is completely broken.
This project offers the opportunity to explore the element 'earth' deeper. It is an occasion to become acquainted with this obvious but hardly known matter. Volunteers will help with the process and the building up of the structure, layer by layer. The rather monotonous actions - the prolonged and repeated mixing and tamping - can cause irritation or stimulation. It is a training in patience - toleration of him/herself - and perseverance."
