The 8 chörten building is situated on the circumambulation path of the village or ‘rgya-skor’, and is built on a ridge at Zomal side. It is a mud brick structure, housing the eight different types of chörten with a circumambulation path around. Colourful paintings of approximately 120 years old cover the inner walls.
At the start of the campaign, the condition of the structure had severely worsened over the last years: huge cracks in the outer and inner walls, separation of corners, loss of parapets and washed out bricks had caused a further inclination of the entire building (up to 40,5 cm over a height of 2,3 m) and everybody feared a complete collapse.
The first step was to secure the building by propping the leaning wall and wooden window screen with 21 poles and by tying the balustrade constructions and walls together. Due to the bad condition, roof, balustrades and all outer walls were taken down. The severe cracks in the inner (painted) walls were reinforced at the backside with thin willow sticks in the joints and a course mud mortar. Then the walls of the outer construction were rebuilt with old and new (same size) adobe bricks and the window screen was straightened.
As the rear wall of the inner construction consisted of a single adobe brick of 20cm width and the murals showed only few cracks near the corners, we tried and managed to return the leaning wall to an almost upright position. The outer sides of these walls were then pointed and plastered to protect and strengthen them.
Three new wooden structures, ring beams and roof beams were put in to support the traditionally layered earthen roof.
The enthusiastic team of mason, carpenter, architect, conservators and 10-12 labours completed the structural restoration and conservation work at the wall paintings in 42 working days.
A second team of conservators went in August to take out the props, to put a protection paint on the new wooden structures and to clean and restore the chörten, the wooden screen and the murals.
Whitewashing was done in september by the Ladakhi Achi Association trainees Jigmet Namgyal and Konchok Rinchen and some local labours.
